When I created The Rich Barber, I wanted to do more than build a brand. I wanted to promote a mindset. I wanted to build a legacy and give voice to my community. I wanted to merge the craft of barbering with entrepreneurship, and to use that craft to promote education, create change, and inspire others. Every single one of us has an impact on the world. How big we make it, and what legacy it leaves, is up to us. In my book The Rich Barber Method I focus on how to make a memorable impact on your clients and community. I outline the fundamentals I learned to create my own success and chart my story from inmate to industry innovator. This roadmap offers everything I’ve learned over 10 years of barbering on how to attract and keep clientele, know and charge what you’re worth, and promote yourself and your skillset.
The relationship you foster with your clientele is the cornerstone of your success. Without clients, you have no business. If you can’t treat your clients right, you have no business being in business. That means offering the best customer experience to every customer, every time. When I opened up my first barbershop in Sacramento, I wanted to create a space that could offer my clients luxury, tranquility, and comfort. I wanted to build on the historical legacy of the “First-Class Barbershop” to refine, modernize, and perfect the barbershop haircut experience. Today, I operate three state-of-the-art barbershops with only the best tools, conditions, and staff. We commit ourselves to making every customer feel welcome when they walk in and fresh as hell when they walk out. Great haircuts mean great vibes and great vibes mean great days (and great reviews).
Products for People, Not Profits
For entrepreneurs and brand owners, treating your customer right means creating products that solve problems in our everyday lives. For me, that meant looking at my daily problems as a barber, finding a solution, and bringing that solution to others. That’s why I patented The 1 Min. Blade Modifier®, the first and only trimmer blade sharpener on the market. I wanted a product that could improve my day-to-day life, maximize the life of my trimmer blades, and enhance the quality of my cuts. I expanded my vision into products like the Pro Rich Shampoo + Conditioner Set and Pro Rich Beard Oil, offering formulas without parabens, phthalates, and drying agents. I wanted to create grooming solutions designed specifically for natural, texturized hair that could remain beneficial for all hair types. That’s why I hand-picked ingredients for my formulas that I knew would solve common problems from dry scalp to hair loss to patchy facial hair. I listened to the issues my clients told me they were having and created a solution that focused on science over selling. The Pro Rich Shampoo + Conditioner Set and the Pro Rich Beard Oil work to block DHT, prevent hair loss, stimulate hair growth, and properly nourish hair for optimal hair health. My decision to use organic ingredients informed my decision to bottle my products in glass, keeping my formulas fresher for my clients and exemplifying one way to create products with people over profits in mind. I knew that if I created what my customers really needed, I would see the success I really wanted.
Changing the Lives of Entrepreneurs
My goal with The Rich Barber was always to move beyond the barbershop. I wanted to offer a first-class customer experience and provide solutions to common problems, but I also wanted to change the future for entrepreneurs like me. I wanted to develop a system that could bring success to other entrepreneurs, hustlers, and anyone on their grind. It was simple: master your craft, keep your clients happy and coming back, promote your mastery, and increase your prices. Rinse and repeat until you find yourself where you once dreamed you’d be. I took this system to the broader world, speaking at events and podcasts, creating my YouTube, and building my social media community. I went to beauty expositions, barber and hair colleges, and more to promote a simple mindset: your impact is up to you. Now, I’m sharing what I’ve learned over the past 10 years in hopes that other young entrepreneurs will have an easier path to the future they want to see. To learn how to succeed in barbering, business, and more, read The Rich Barber Method. No matter your chosen craft, The Rich Barber Method offers you a roadmap to success, understanding your worth, and creating a brand that leaves a memorable impact on your life, your customers, and your world.
